Property Tax Forum Scheduled in Lancaster County Next Week

When Lancaster County homeowners call or write to me at my district office or visit with me at community events, one of the most frequently discussed topics of conversation is property tax reform. Property taxes are primarily directed to fund our schools, but the increasing cost of education including pensions, construction and employee health care costs have created enormous tax bills that are growing extremely difficult for many homeowners to pay.

Nearly every Pennsylvanian agrees that the property tax model is not the best way to fund our schools. However, the problem lies in finding a new model to replace the current system to ensure the state meets its constitutional obligation to provide a thorough and efficient system of public education.

On August 30, Senator Scott Martin and I will host the Senate Majority Policy Committee for a public forum in Lancaster County to discuss local perspectives on property tax reform and explore alternative solutions to the current system. The forum will take place at the Pequea Valley High School Auditorium, located at 4033 E. Newport Road in Kinzers, beginning at 7 p.m.

A number of organizations and other stakeholders in the process have been invited to offer testimony, and there will be a period for questions on school tax reform from local residents. I encourage community residents to participate in this unique forum to add their voices to the conversation.
