Hearing Explores Property Tax Reform and Potential Elimination

Property taxes have been a persistent thorn in the side of homeowners throughout Lancaster County and across the entire state for decades, and the problem is only getting worse. No issue generates more phone calls and emails to my office than complaints about the current system and the rising financial burdens it places on homeowners.

Last week, Senator Scott Martin and I hosted a hearing of the Senate Majority Policy Committee in Lancaster County to take a closer look at the impact of property tax increases and examine potential solutions. One of the ideas that was discussed at the hearing is the total elimination of property taxes over the next several years. I support this concept and have signed on as a cosponsor of legislation that would permanently eliminate property taxes statewide.

A number of different ideas and perspectives were shared during the hearing, and I appreciated the chance to hear from testifiers regarding the potential benefits and consequences of the various property tax reform proposals that have been introduced in the General Assembly.

Video of the hearing is available here.

My thanks to all of the lawmakers, testifiers and community residents who came out to learn more about the ongoing effort to reform or eliminate property taxes.

Coffee and Conversation Event Scheduled for September 25

My Coffee and Conversation events offer a great opportunity to meet community residents and have an informal chat about what is going on in Harrisburg and in our community. I look forward to having those discussions at my next event in Elizabethtown on September 25.

I hope you can join me for refreshments and conversation from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the Elizabethtown Borough Office, located at 600 South Hanover Street in Elizabethtown.

I enjoyed visiting with a number of residents at Cocalico Place in Ephrata and hearing about their concerns and life experiences.
