Spotted Lanternfly Quarantine Expanded

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has added 21 municipalities in Berks, Bucks, Lehigh, Montgomery and Northampton counties to the areas quarantined due to the presence of the invasive insect Spotted Lanternfly. In Northampton County, the quarantine now covers the City of Bethlehem and Bethlehem Township.

The quarantine order directs residents and municipal authorities to follow guidelines to prevent the movement of Spotted Lanternflies at any stage of development. This includes inspecting all wood and vegetation that might leave the quarantined municipality, in addition to inspecting vehicles, trailers, and other mobile equipment prior to moving it out of the quarantined area.

Spotted Lanternfly is a tremendously destructive pest that spreads rapidly and can be devastating to Pennsylvania’s grapes, hardwoods and hops crops. If you live outside designated Spotted Lanternfly quarantine areas and see this pest, please report it.

Seized Vehicle Auction set for Tuesday

More than 400 vehicles seized by state law enforcement agencies will be offered for public sale at a Commonwealth vehicle auction on Tuesday, August 22, at 10 a.m.

The auction will be held at Manheim Keystone Auto Auction, 488 Firehouse Road, Grantville, Dauphin County. Vehicles include: 2015 Nissan Altima, 2014 Ford Focus, 2014 Jeep Parasol Sport, 2008 Cadillac Escalade, 2004 Landrover Range Rover HSE, 2006 BMW 530xi, 2005 Lexus ES 300, 2000 Jaguar S-Type and more. Fifteen Motorcycles from Harley-Davidson and Suzuki will be available as well. The auction will include used state agency vehicles.

$1 Fishing Licenses Available for Labor Day

If you haven’t been fishing for a while and want to enjoy the outdoors on Labor Day, a special, one-day fishing license might make it enticing. Licenses are normally sold for the year.

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission $1 license is for adult residents and non-residents. The license - good for Labor Day, September 4 only - provides an easy and affordable way for everyone to enjoy a special day with family and friends while fishing on the Commonwealth’s waters.

New App Aims to Reduce Impaired Driving

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has developed a free SaferRide smartphone app as part of the effort to curb impaired driving.

The simple app can be used to quickly pinpoint the user’s location and call a nearby taxi or pre-programmed contact for a safe ride home. The app is free and available for Android and Apple devices.

Standing Against Racism

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that ALL men [and women] are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

Racism, hatred and bigotry have no place in our society and should not be tolerated. My heart and prayers are with the families of those injured and killed in this week's violence and those working to keep their communities safe.

What happened in Charlottesville must never happen again.

Congratulations to Cody Weber of Troop 352 in Bethlehem for earning the rank of Eagle Scout. For his project, Cody collected backpacks, clothing and food for Catholic Charities of the Lehigh Valley and assembled them into kits to benefit area families in need. It was my pleasure to join Rep. Marcia Hahn in recognizing your great accomplishment.

I joined Pocono Raceway in Stroudsburg this week as they prepared for the Indy race this weekend. It was also a great opportunity to recognize Red Cross of the Poconos and their invaluable work.

This week I joined a number of area legislators in recognizing the meaningful work being done by the Nurse Family Partnership throughout our region and state. The NFP does critical work in assisting low income, at risk mothers as they navigate the challenges of having a baby for the first time. Through the work of skilled nurses, they provide counsel to mothers and help start a child off on a successful path in their first two developmental years. Thank you for all the great work you continue to do.

I had the honor of presenting Josephine Vigini with a citation recognizing her 102nd birthday. She is such a sweet woman who has seen and experienced so much over her lifetime. May you have many more blessed years to come.

Congratulations to Adams Jewelry 611 as they celebrate the opening of their new, state-of-the-art location in Stroudsburg. Thank you for continuing to treat area customers like family and for helping strengthen our local economy. May you have much success in the years ahead.
