Senator Pat Stefano

Dear Friend,

Please find an update on what has been happening in Harrisburg and around the 32nd District below.

Public Workshop on the Need for a PA Constitutional Convention

State Senators John H. Eichelberger, Jr., (R-Blair) and State Representative Ryan Warner (R-Lemont Furnace), will join me to hold a public workshop to explain the purpose and need for proposed legislation calling for a limited Constitutional Convention.  It will take place at the Fay-Penn Economic Development Council’s office on Tuesday December 5 at 9:00am.

Senator Eichelberger is the sponsor of the legislation that would establish a PA Constitutional Convention to provide Pennsylvanians with the opportunity to directly take charge of reforming the General Assembly, the court system and the executive branch of state government. The Senators’ presentation will include details on the legislative process, the structure and scope of the convention, as well as potential subjects of debate.

I support Senator Eichelberger’s proposal and am excited to host this forum in my district.  Pennsylvania is in desperate need of reform. I have introduced and supported bills to make these kinds of changes but they have not moved because of the status quo’s resistance to real change. This effort is another way to achieve these reforms in a comprehensive way. By reforming Pennsylvania’s government, we will reduce the size and scope of government and eliminate the constant threat of tax increases for the foreseeable future.

Area School Districts Awarded Safe Schools Grants

Eight School Districts in the 32nd Senatorial District have been awarded just over $224,000 in state grants to fund programs, security-related equipment and personnel that address school safety and violence through Pennsylvania’s Safe Schools Initiative Targeted Grant program.

I am very pleased that many school districts in this area will have some additional help to ensure our teachers and children feel safe in their learning environments.  Teachers cannot teach and children cannot learn in an environment where they don’t feel safe. The additional resources provided by these grants are crucial to improving school safety.

The following school districts received Safe Schools Equipment Grants:  Funds will be used to assist schools in reducing unnecessary student disciplinary actions and promote a climate of greater productivity, safety and learning.

  • Westmoreland Intermediate Unit - $19,877.
  • Intermediate Unit 1, which serves Fayette, Greene and Washington Counties - $20,000.
  • Uniontown Area School District - $19,825.
  • Rockwood Area School District - $14,640.

The following schools were awarded Safe Schools School Police/Resource Officer Grants.  The grants are for two years and are intended to be used for the training and compensation of school resource officers and school police officers.

  • Conemaugh Township School District - $40,000.
  • Connellsville Area School District - $40,000
  • Southmoreland School District - $20,000*.
  • Windber Area School District - $30,000*.
  • Mount Pleasant Area School District - $20,000*.
    • *Second Year Allocation

The program is funded by the Department of Education through Pennsylvania’s Safe Schools Initiative Targeted Grant program.  Public school entities, nonpublic and private school entities, police agencies and municipalities may apply for funding.  Grants may be used for the training and compensation of school resource officers and school police officers and to fund programs or security-related equipment that address school safety and violence.

Connellsville High School Choir Visits Harrisburg

On November 15th, I was proud to welcome Connellsville Area High School Choir to Harrisburg.  They came to the state capitol to perform on the rotunda steps and I took them on a tour of the Senate and House Chambers.  These are tremendously talented young men and women that we can all be proud of!

Around the District

Around the Thanksgiving Holiday, I hosted two events to thank our Veterans.  In Somerset, Rep. Carl Metzgar and I met veterans at the Somerset American Legion Post 181. In Fayette, I met with veterans at the American Legion in Hopwood thanks in large part to our host, Commander Rob Doria.  Please remember to say your own thank you to the veterans here in the 32nd District and all over this great nation as we enter this holiday season.

I was invited to attend the opening of the newly renovated, state-of-the-art Engineering & Arts Suite to the campus and community. Congratulations to Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus on their latest addition!

Nathan and I enjoyed the first weekend of skiing at the great Seven Springs Resort, in the heart of the Laurel Highlands.  Take time to enjoy the great outdoors throughout the 32nd district this winter and all year-round.
